Getting the virus.

Full scan of PC.
Now run an anti-virus scan on your PC. You should still be in safe mode. Leave your computer alone at this time to make sure it uses less resources and removes everything. Once its finished make sure to get rid of all instances of the virus. There should be a remove all button after the scan.
My browser was hijacked.
When your browser gets hijacked run a Trojan or hijack remover. A good example of one is the smitfraudfix. When its finished running take out everything it found. Is the Virus still present?
This section may be for advanced users only. IF the virus name is known do a search for it in the registry. Remove all the associated keys that are found with it. Also do a search in the windows or hard drive. You can remove those files also. Toggle system restore so that it can delete remnants of the files. Check msconfig where the start-up files are, uncheck the unused ones.
Be in the know.
