The latest move in the war between Google and Microsoft is Google\’s incorporation of My Space status updates into Google\’s search engine results. This means that users can now configure their search engine to not only find web sites that are relevant to the term they are searching for, but also to find the most recent and relevant post related to that term on My Space. Of course the concept of searching through real time status updates on social networking sites is nothing new for Google users, since Google already offers this functionality for Facebook and Twitter posts.
Consider for a moment the ramifications of the current web war. Microsoft and Google are putting their hands in everyone\’s pockets. They are rapidly gaining more and more control over the web and the different, very successful companies beneath them. Unfortunately or fortunately depending on how you look at it, Google still holds primary control, and there is little chance of Microsoft taking the whole market from them.
While Google offers great products, and there are obviously many, many people who are happy with them, it is never a good thing if one company takes over the whole market, and has no competition at all. No one company should have complete dominance over the internet. This is why the competition between Google and Microsoft ultimately benefits us, the users.
It seems like there may be more to this battle than meets the eye. As it seems that the goal is not only primary control, but total control. With so much information within the control of just one individual or a few individuals the world could be turned on its ear. And while Google is a more than reputable company now, what if they were to be taken over in the future? Where would that leave the information highway and the power of controlling it?
