Getting Indexed By Search Engine Spiders

SEO 2 Comments »

Search engines use software programs knows as spiders to crawl the web to build the search engine databases. Web pages are retrieved by these programs and analyzed. To get your pages on the top of the search engines you need to first get them visited by these search engine spiders. Your job is to design your site so the spiders will find it and come back often, this will get your pages listed so they will be found when people search for them.

Search engines make their decisions based on programmed priorities. They don’t care how accurate or well-written the content on your site is, because they don’t know. Search engines rank the significance of your web page content by counting the number of other websites that link to your site and measuring the quality of the sites that link to your site. A high ranked website like ArticleCity referring to a blog post that you wrote will pull your blog higher up on Google’s search results.

Search engines do care that you have unique, fresh content. Unique, new content is like spider food, this is what they look for. Create good, original content, update it regularly and keep adding to it.

Search engine spiders care about the structure of your web pages, they give extra weight to keywords placed as titles of pages and titles of paragraphs. Spiders compare text in the title tag against the content on the page, if the two are not related this will decrease your ranking.

Search engine spiders have a tough time with dynamic sites. Some spiders get stuck because they can’t see the page. Search engine spiders like a mix of copy, keywords, text and links. You want to have 200-500 words of copy per page, well labeled images, easy to navigate links and keyword rich title tags.

Always have a up to date site map. The spiders look for site maps so they can index all the pages in a site. A site map makes it easier for them to get to the deeper site pages. If the search engine spiders can not find all the pages on your site then no one will see them. It also helps to use keyword links at the bottom of the pages to connect relevant pages and give the spiders something to follow.

Spiders collect links from each page they visit, and later follow those links through to other pages. In this way, they essentially follow the links from one page to another. Files known as robots.txt files give spiders directions on how to index your site, including any directories that you may decide are off limits to the search engines.

Search engines don’t respond to changes overnight, it might take a few weeks or more to see the results of your efforts reflected in search engine results.

Promoting Business with SEO

Just like everyone else, you probably are wondering how to get your website noticed! If you are a small business with big expectations, you probably had a website built and expected the orders to just roll in. You may have already tried some Pay Per Click advertising and possible even paid to be listed in some online directories.

Hopefully you have figured out that people shopping online dont go through a directory to find you. They go to a Search Engine, like Google, Yahoo and MSN Live. They type in a keyword or phrase describing what they want and the Search Engine gives them a list of websites, starting with what the Search Engine believes are the most relevant results.

It is these results, rather being found in the first group of them that drives traffic to your website. No matter what you have to offer the key to success online is to be found on the first page of these search results when someone is looking for what you have to offer.

The great thing about those search results is that they are working every hour of every day. The bad thing is that if you cant be found in those top few results, your neighbor across the street could be looking for what you have to offer and they’ll never find you.

If you have tons of traditional business experience the things you have used in the past to promote your store are going to be pretty much useless online. For instance, before the internet, it was not unusual for a business to spend thousands dollars per month on Yellow page advertising. When the internet first went public that business had to be sure that those ads pointed to their website. Now after only a few years, most households dont even know where their phone book is anymore.

On your online store, you may have a few selections for a specific item. In your store you may display these items according to cost. The typical online shopper is not searching for every item you have to offer. They are searching for one brand and one style at every store that offers that one specific item.

In a small town, a local store owner is probably complaining that he has a specific item that he bought from his supplier, and that it will not sell until he discounts it at the end of the season. However, this same item is being sold in the big city and has customers lining up around the block hoping to get a chance to buy this specific item as soon as it is delivered.

When the local store owner decides to put his inventory online, it allows the kids in the big city to find the item they want regardless of what small town store has them! It takes a bit to wrap your head around the concept, but the online shopper is going to be more specific about what they are looking for and they dont really care where your store actually is as long as you can get the product they want delivered to them.

If you want to sell your products online, to obtain success, you must offer your products from the top down rather than trying to use your website to sell the stuff you could not move in your store. The structure of your website must be appealing and break down products and categories. A good SEO will be able to research the products you have to offer that match up with the hottest searches performed and help you to target your campaign.

Although it is nice, only having a cool website is not enough. Your website must be built in a search friendly way. Let’s say that you put a great picture of a specific item on your website. It is the hottest item going and everyone wants it. But if all you have is a picture, the Search Spider cant read your picture. It is not human. It searches for text. Text in the form of Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) and in the form of content on your page. These are spider food.

The Search Spider searches your site, following your linking structure and recording what it finds then it takes it back to the Search Engine Database. The Search Engine then runs that data through its algorithm to determine what searches your might be relevant to your site and how relevant your data is compared to other websites it has recorded.

What does this mean? The world has changed and is more advanced than it was 10 or even 5 years ago. It has changed in ways we could not ever predict. If we had computers in the eighteen hundreds, they would have predicted that every city in America would now be twenty feet deep in horse manure.

Your website is proof that you are trying to be a player in the new way of doing business. But now you have to index your site in the way that can be found by the Search Engines, your products can be identified and produced as relevant when a search is done.

Rather than showing a picture of your product and writing a caption under it that says something like This is a very popular item this year, use specific terms that someone would search for when they are looking for this exact product. This will take a little more effort and refining but diligence and persistence pay off.

Another thing that takes some understanding and patience is to know that the Search Spider does not live on your website. It has other places to go, too. You have to allow it time to get around to checking out your changes.

Dont be afraid to do some investigative work on your own. Check out your competition. See how they describe the products on their site. A little homework on your part will also help you get an understanding of what youre up against.

If you are using Pay Per Click advertising they will provide Keyword Suggestion Tools. But please use caution. These tools are really focusing on getting you to pay to show up in as many searches as they can. Although that might sound like exactly what you want too, the truth is that aside from being expensive, if your site does not exactly match to what the searcher is looking for, you are wasting money.

A Search Optimization Service will be help you focus your energy and resources in the areas that will get you more conversions because you will be showing up for the most relevant searches all the time rather than just when you can afford Pay Per Click advertising.

Learn About What Makes Good SEO

SEO No Comments »

Break it down into small bite size pieces, that is the key to understanding search engine optimisation and also do not be afraid of it, its actually very simple when you know how. Good SEO produces brilliant results, but what are the best SEO techniques?

For example many people get hung up on making sure their website is keyword rich and of course highly relevant to their chosen industry. This is called on page SEO.

Even though this part of the SEO process has minimal impact on your search engine ranking the keyword research is vitally important and should never be overlooked as this is what customers will use to find your site.

Make sure you correctly add keywords to tags in images called ALT tags and also to the main meta tags within your web pages. Overlooking this may not damage your SEO campaign completely but will certainly not help. Be careful though because too many keywords on anyone page can be identified by search engines as Spam and could have a disastrous effect on your rankings.

In fact avoid all black hat techniques like stuffing keywords into irrelevant areas at all costs as this is not only going to back fire on you long term but it is bad practice that takes up too much time and for what?

There are also a few grey hat techniques that some people like using but again my advice is stay whiter than white and always follow Google preferred SEO techniques and you really will be embraced by the search engines for many years. So avoid grey hat practices like white copy on white backgrounds.

OK so this is not forbidden but its risky and what’s the point of upsetting a major search engine, after all you need them more than they need you. Just construct your website around good well written and interesting content and then you can’t go too far wrong.

Adding a blog to your website is highly recommended and new posts made to this blog can be emailed to customers past and present. This is not only a great SEO practice to increase your on page SEO and boost your rankings but it could land you some repeat business.

So what about off page SEO? Well this is the most important element in boosting your search engine placement and will take the most time so patience is a very useful trait to have during this point in the process.

Links – They are the holy grail of SEO. Driving traffic to your site by having your websites URL on other websites and promoting your websites pages from other sites. Sometimes called link juice this method is by far the most important out of all of the SEO practices.

However you have make sure you don’t backlink from sites that are deemed inappropriate as this would devalue your link juice scoring – if there is such a thing! In short make sure you get links from relevant websites that have something to do with yours.

My number one piece of advice on link building is do not opt for the obvious link farms and three way linking systems. These can largely have a negative impact on your search engine optimisation campaign and undo all the hard work you have put in.

Links alone though will not necessarily get you sales so you need to make sure your website is built in such a way that you capture all potential customers that have the intention on buying not just browsing. This is hard to explain and very much depends on your niche.

Try to enjoy search engine optimisation and don’t get too disheartened if you don’t get the immediate results you had hoped for – SEO does take time, a lot of time for that matter but it really is worth it and once your where you want to be you can ease off the pedal…well a little bit.

Don’t let SEO scare you, it really isn’t that difficult – For more information and help on search engine optimisation or how to get your website ranked on the first page of Google then please read our SEO services and support pages at SEOrocket
