Anchored backlinks is touted as the main strategy to getting your site or blog to the top of the search engine rankings for your desired keyword. It has been said that there is not such thing as too many backlinks, and that if you are not ranking high enough in Google, just get more backlinks.
I would classify the various ways you can get anchored backlinks into 3 main areas:
Anchored Backlinks From Your Own Blogs Or Websites
To accomplish this, you can have one main site about your product, say clocks. You can have a blog that talks about anything and everything related to clocks, a hub at HubPages that describes all the different types of clocks, a Squidoo lens that goes into detail about clock manufacturing, and …. you get the picture. You can then have anchored backlinks from all those sites linking to your main website about clocks.
Post To Forums, Blogs And Web Directories
There are countless places on the web where you can post a backlink to your own website. Examples include participating in forums, commenting in blogs, writing articles for the article directories and submitting your website to web directories. But do be mindful of what is allowed before participating and posting.
Getting Webmasters To Post Your Link
To work this technique, you need to get out there and ask other people to link to your website. In many respects, this is harder that the previous 2 techniques, but pays handsome dividends as these type of links are considered to be of a higher quality by the search engines.
You can find a list of some of the usual ways of getting third party backlinks to your website or blog. Take note that there are many other ways of doing so, and you are really only limited by your own creativity.
* Link Exchange. The idea behind this technique is simple – you scratch my back, and I will scratch yours. As the title suggests, the webmasters involved will place backlinks to each other’s sites. Usually, the links will be from link directories or from the home pages. More recently, the practice of linking between blog posts, or from within the content of a website, has become commonplace.
* Link Bait. Despite the name, linkbaiting is a legitimate SEO technique to generate visits to your website, and will also serve to create backlinks for you. Linkbaiting is essentially to come up with content, or link bait, that webmasters just have to link to, or people just have to talk about. Controversial or funny content would usually work very well as link bait.
* Give Away Free Stuff. Nobody can resist a free gift. Look for products, free or otherwise, that allows you to give it away for free. Do make sure that it is a useful product. Offer a free download of the product, and request that the webmaster provide a backlink to your website in return.
Conclusion
It was much harder to get anchored backlinks in the early days of the Internet. Nowadays, with social sites like Facebook, Twitter and others, it is sometimes as easy as just asking for a link. However, the competition for links has also increased, so you will still need to stand out with quality content. After all is said and done, the phrase: “Content is king” still holds true.
